Central Pier Pre-Demolition: Safe and Efficient Refrigerant Recovery

At A Glance

A-Gas in Australia recently completed a recovery project on Central Pier in Melbourne, Australia. The pier was due to be demolished but contained several restaurants and function centres with air conditioning systems containing a mix of high-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants.

The customer understood the importance of preventing this refrigerant from being released into the atmosphere. However, because of the site’s vulnerability, no vehicles or heavy machinery were allowed access.

Maintaining safety at all times and complying with local regulations was also vital to the customer. It also needed the recovery to be completed as quickly as possible due to the demolition timeline.

Challenges

  • Preventing the release of refrigerant from various decommissioned systems into the atmosphere.
  • Recovering gas from hard-to-access systems due to site vulnerability.
  • Tight demolition project timelines.

Benefits

  • Successful recovery of high-GWP refrigerant from multiple systems helped client meet their environmental and compliance obligations.
  • Mobility of high-speed recovery equipment enabled gas to be recovered efficiently, without compromising safety.
  • Project completed within the specified tight timeframe to align with the demolition schedule.

Solution

Using highly mobile and custom-designed equipment including 75-metre-long hoses, along with effective recovery practices, A-Gas’ Rapid Recovery Team completed the project safely, effectively and on time. The team also provided the client with compliance documentation and a certificate detailing the type and amount of refrigerant.

Results

This recovery prevented the refrigerant from being released into the atmosphere and helped all parties stay on the demolition timeline. The refrigerant has been transported back to A-Gas’ local facility for further analysis and processing.

Safely removing refrigerant gas from decommissioned systems is a critical step before major demolition works can commence. We are pleased that A-Gas Rapid Recovery’s expertise was able to assist our client in meeting their environmental and compliance obligations, as well as tight project timeframes.
